Analyse how mise-en-scene elements contributed to the construction of stereotypes in media product you have studied (15 marks).

In the bathroom fight scene during 'Worlds End' it conforms to the negative stereotypes and stigma of gang culture. The elements within mise-en-scene have contributed massively to the construction of stereotypes in the film 'Worlds End'. Due to the media representing hoodies as negative and with a bad connotation in order to scapegoat gang culture, this is conformed to within the sequence by showing young hooded boys who start a fight with older men.

Another stereotype in bathroom fight scene that is conformed is Asian representation. This links to mise-en-scene as one of the characters ethnicity is Asian. In the scene the characters that are Asian are stereotypically represented as having fighting ability, the stigma being that all Asian people have learnt karate in their life time, which they do in the bathroom fight scene, however in the fight sequence they also challenge that as at the end he is ultimately defeated by one of the older men. This then links to the old vs young stereotype.

The old vs young stigma, which links to Levi Strauss's binary opposition, is being challenged in the Bathroom fight sequence as it shows that the older men win the brawl between them and the younger group of boys. Stereotypically older people are weak and incapable of fighting, whereas younger people are more strong and in shape. However in this scene they challenge this and show That the older men are stronger and more able than the audience would usually think as well as proving the old generation theory, where older people can't do anything physical, wrong.
