Media Institution Ownership 


Public Service Broadcasting:
  • Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) means that programmes are made for the public, as they strive to entertain their viewers.
  • They usually do not have advertisements.
  • PSB's are generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers about news and important information. 
  • The BBC is a good example of Public Service Broadcasting.
Remit:
  • The Responsibility of a programme.
Vertical and Horizontal Integration:
  • Vertical Integration: Is where a media company has the ability to control the production, distribution and exchange (consumption) of a product. 
  • An example of this would be Disney as they control their products, distribution and exchange of their products.
  • Horizontal Integration: Is where a media company has a number of subsiding companies that are used to support the marketing of its products.
  • An example of this would be the BBC as they have paper based marketing such as the Radio Times to market their programmes. 

Synergy:
  • The interaction of two or more organization, substance or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Funding:
  • How a media platform is funded, whether it is through advertisements, such as the ITC or TV Licence like the BBC.
The Structure of the BBC:
  • The BBC is a cross-media organisation (1 of the larges in Europe).
  • This means that it is vertically and horizontally integrated. 
  • 75% of the BBC's funding comes from the TV licence fee (currently costs £147 for a colour and £49.50 for a black and white TV licence) that everyone has to pay.
  • The remaining 25% goes to the worldwide sales of its programmes, publications such as radio times, good food etc...
  • BBC also only advertise their own programmes to encourage their views to watch those programmes.
  • The BBC's remit is to enrich people lives with their programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain. To reflect the uk, its culture and the value to the world.

Creating a Brand:

  • Using logos with the new doctors that are a part of the new season.


Synergy:

  • So Doctor Who can be advertised across a range of different media platforms through Horizontal Integration.

Production Roles in Doctor Who:
  • Script Supervisor: script supervisor is a member of a film crew and oversees the continuity of the motion picture including wardrobe, props, and the actions of the actors during a scene.
  • Script Editor: script editor is a member of the production team of scripted television programmes, usually dramas and comedies.
  • Camera Operator: camera operator is part of a [film crew]consisting of the director of photography and one or more camera assistants.
  • Focus Pullers: An assistant to a film or television cameraman, who is responsible for keeping the lens focused during filming.
  • Camera Assistant: An assistant to a film or television cameraman, who is responsible for keeping the lens focused during filming.
  • Grip: They constitute their own department on a film set and are directed by a key grip. (How something is held/gripped)
  • Sound Maintenance Engineers: They are responsible for managing and maintaining various elements of the sound equipment used in the course of television and film production.
  • Gaffer: A gaffer is a person in charge of others; for example a boss.
  • Best Boy: The best boy is the assistant to the chief electrician of a film crew.
  • Art Director: A sole art director is in charge of supervising and unify the vision.

ITV Case Study (The X-Factor):

Proxemics:
  • This refers to the distance (proximity) of one character (or part of a set) to another.

Cross Media Integration:
  • ITV use both vertical and horizontal integration as they have both social media platforms, such as twitter and Instagram, to promote and advertise as well as using paper based advertisement and their own website to only promote their TV programmes. 

Different Channels:
  • ITV/ITV HD/ITV 2: 24 hours free-to-air entertainment tv channel that release TV shows such as the X-Factor
  • ITV 3: Shows that are targeted to a more older and formal audience, as they release soaps.
  • ITV 4: They release shows that are related to sports, for example motorsports, football, etc...
  • ITVBe: ITVBe release more lifestyle and reality TV programmes, such as The Only Way Is Essex.
  • CITV: Childrens channel that ITV has formed, they produce shows for children, such as Horrid Henry and Art Attack.
Merchandise: 
ITV itself does not sell merchandise, but the more popular TV programmes do for example:
  • The X-Factor sells merchandise on their own website through live nation. They sell t-shirts, hoodies, key chains, mugs etc...

Time Shifting:
  • A recoding of a programme that is listened to or watched after a live broadcast that is recorded from its parent company.
  • Not just relevant to TV also relevant to Radio.

  2. For the textual analysis of the Doctor Who trailer, try to avoid comments like "It captures your attention straight away and makes you want to watch the rest of the trailer" (Slide 2/5) - this is quite vague and the analysis of effect needs to be more detailed.
