(A) Explain what the term 'readership' means. (2 marks)
Readership is the amount of readers that a media products has, for example 'The Sun' during oct 2014 and sept 2015 have a readership of about 2692 male readers and 1973 female readers. (2 marks)
(B) Analysing the data about 'The Sun' and 'Daily Mail' newspapers, describe two difference in terms of their target audience. (4)
Within the two different magazines age is a very big difference for example, more 15 to 34 year old people read 'The Sun', 1193 to be exact, where as for the 'Daily Mail' only about 463 15 to 34 year olds read their newspapers. Another difference is the social grade that reads each newspapers. For 'The Sun' people in the social grades C2DE reader 'The Sun' more, where as more people in the social grades ABC1 read the 'Daily Mail'. (4 marks)
(C) From your knowledge of demographics describe and justify the type of content that might feature in Four newspapers of your choice from the data provided. (8 Marks)
Newspaper 1: 'The Times'
Content and Justification: For the newspaper 'The Times' the content should continue to be more sophisticated, factual and informational, for example about politics and global issue. This is because the broadsheet newspaper aims to sell to people in the social grades ABC1 that are stereotypically and according to the data predominately rich white males.
Newspaper 2: 'The Sun'
Content and Justification: For the newspaper 'The Sun' the content should be more gossip based and more entertaining than factual and knowledge based. This is because the demographic that read and buy 'The Sun' are mostly in the C2DE social grade according to the data given, the stereotypically target audience for 'The Sun' is called the 'White Van Man' due to the page 3 content and the sports content.
Newspaper 3: 'Daily Mail'
Content and Justification: The 'Daily Mail's' content should continue to be gossip based as their demographic is according to the data it can be suggested that because of the gossip content the newspaper is read predominantly by the women in the social grade ABC1.
